West nil virus mainly infects birds, but occasionally an infected mosquito can spread to humans. The virus is not transmitted directly from birds to humans and low risk of infection.
In human infection, the virus usually causes no symptoms or may cause mild flu-like symptoms.
"People who are elderly and people with weakened immune systems are considered at high risk for suffering the worst of this disease," officials said. "People with high risk of infection must wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants and apply mosquito repellent with DEET or other repellents to exposed skin according to manufacturer's directions. "For children, they must use products with DEET concentrations of less than 30 percent," said U.S. Department of Health.
